![]() ![]() ![]() It takes a lot of effort on my part to encourage those students to continue to strive for their personal best while taking the time to listen to the ideas of others and see the ways their understanding can develop through dialogue. Instead they want to be done first, get the highest score, or be the best. They are resistant to waiting for another student or helping someone else. However, each year, I have several students who do not want to work in a group or with a partner. ![]() My teaching is guided by Vygotsky’s theoretical framework that social interaction plays a fundamental role in the development of cognition. From the outset, I work hard to establish a safe, welcoming environment based on trust and mutual respect.I strongly believe that we learn more from each other and that learning is a social process. I see that tension between the individualistic and the collectivist archetypes played out every day in my classroom. I was fascinated by the idea of cultural archetypes that was introduced in Chapter 2. ![]()
